The Fish Identification specialty changes that, giving you a working knowledge of the species you’re most likely to encounter around Koh Tao and the tools to keep building that knowledge on every subsequent dive.

The course covers fish families rather than memorising individual species — understanding that a fish belongs to the grouper family, for example, tells you something immediately about its behaviour, diet, and where on the reef you’re likely to find it. That framework makes identification both more reliable and more interesting than rote memorisation.

Around Koh Tao the variety of species is genuinely impressive for a reef system of its size. Reef fish, pelagics, rays, sharks, nudibranchs — the site list reads like a good cross-section of Indo-Pacific marine life.
