Overview

The Diver Stress & Rescue course has a reputation among divers as the one that changes how you think underwater. Before rescue training, most divers focus primarily on their own experience — what they’re seeing, how their air is going, where the group is. After it, they start reading the water differently. They notice when someone in the group looks uncomfortable. They think about what they’d do if something went wrong. That shift in awareness is the real value of the course, and it stays with you on every dive afterward.

The course covers two broad areas. The first is self-rescue — managing your own stress and equipment problems underwater, from a free-flowing regulator to an out-of-air situation. The second is assisting other divers — recognising the signs of distress, approaching a panicking diver safely, bringing someone to the surface, and managing the situation from there. Both are practised in realistic scenarios in the water, not just discussed in theory.

Koh Tao is an excellent place to do this course. The variety of conditions around the island — shallow bays, open water, moderate current at some sites — means the rescue scenarios can be run in realistic environments rather than a controlled pool. Your instructor will set up situations that feel genuine, which is partly why the learning sticks.

The course is also a prerequisite for Divemaster training. But many divers do it with no intention of going pro — simply because being a competent, aware dive buddy is worth something in its own right. If you dive regularly, the Diver Stress & Rescue course is probably the single most valuable thing you can add to your training.

Course Highlights

Realistic rescue scenarios

The course runs rescue scenarios in real open water conditions rather than a controlled pool environment. Approaching a panicking diver at the surface, towing someone to the boat, managing an unconscious diver — these are practised until they feel instinctive rather than theoretical.

Self rescue skills

Before you can help another diver you need to be able to manage your own emergencies. The course covers equipment problems, air sharing, controlled emergency ascents, and stress management — the skills that keep a difficult situation from becoming a dangerous one.

Required for Divemaster

Diver Stress & Rescue is a prerequisite for SSI Divemaster training. If going pro is on your radar, this is a necessary step — but the skills are worth having regardless of whether you plan to continue to professional level.
