Basic Diver

The Basic Diver course is for anyone who wants to find out what breathing underwater feels like before committing to a full course. There’s no multi-day theory, no exam, and no pressure to keep going if you decide diving isn’t for you. It’s one day, two dives, and a clear idea of whether you want more.

The day starts at our Mae Haad dive centre with a short academic session. Your instructor covers how the equipment works, how to breathe through a regulator, how to clear water from your mask, and the handful of hand signals you’ll use underwater. It’s practical, not a lecture.

After the break, the boat heads out. Your first dive starts in shallow, sheltered water, often along the shoreline at Mango Bay, where you practise those skills with the sand just below you before swimming slowly back toward the boat. Then the boat moves to a second site for a full dive, no deeper than 12 metres, with your instructor pointing out the reef and whatever’s living on it that day. Blue spotted ribbontail rays, moray eels and schools of fusiliers are regulars.

Basic Diver isn’t a certification. You’ll receive SSI Basic Diver recognition, but you can’t dive independently afterwards. What you do get is two real ocean dives and an honest sense of whether diving is for you. Plenty of people finish the day and sign up for Open Water before they’ve dried off.
