Overview
Some dive days are just dive days. The 3S is something else.
We depart Mae Haad at 9am and spend the day at three sites that between them cover everything the Gulf of Thailand does best — big pelagics, dense reef life, dramatic underwater architecture, and the kind of wide-open blue water that reminds you why you learned to dive in the first place.
Southwest Pinnacle opens the day. A cluster of granite towers rising from 28 metres, its upper sections are draped in some of the most spectacular anemone fields in the region — home to resident anemonefish, giant groupers, and regular passes by trevally and barracuda schools. Whale shark sightings here are not unheard of.
Shark Island is the wild card — a granite outcrop off Koh Tao’s southeastern tip, named for the dorsal fin silhouette it cuts above the surface. Underwater it’s a different world entirely: boulder formations, christmas tree worm-covered walls, moray eels, triggerfish, butterfly fish in numbers, and a relaxed depth profile that lets you take your time.
Sail Rock is the headline. Widely regarded as the best dive site in the Gulf of Thailand, this open-water pinnacle sits two hours offshore and rewards the journey with schools of barracuda, batfish and trevally, the famous vertical chimney swim-through, and the most reliable whale shark encounters in the region.
