Overview

Sail Rock is widely regarded as one of the best dive sites in the Gulf of Thailand and a highlight of diving from Koh Tao. Located between Koh Tao and Koh Phangan, this offshore pinnacle rises dramatically from the seafloor toward the surface, creating an underwater oasis that attracts marine life from across the region.

The site consists of a large granite pinnacle surrounded by smaller formations and reef structures. Its most famous feature is “The Chimney,” a vertical swim-through that begins at approximately 18 meters and exits around 10 meters, offering one of the most memorable underwater experiences in the Gulf.

Sail Rock is known for its exceptional fish life. Divers commonly encounter huge schools of trevally, barracuda, fusiliers, batfish, and snapper circling the pinnacle. The nutrient-rich waters also make the site one of the best locations in the region for whale shark sightings, although encounters are never guaranteed.

Visibility is often excellent, and the site’s offshore location means conditions can differ significantly from those around Koh Tao itself. While suitable for Advanced Open Water divers and experienced recreational divers, Sail Rock is also regularly visited by less experienced divers under professional supervision due to its world-class reputation.

For many visitors, Sail Rock represents the pinnacle of diving in the Gulf of Thailand. The combination of dramatic topography, schooling fish, and the possibility of encountering a whale shark makes it a dive that remains memorable long after the trip has ended.
