Rock 5: Traditional Lead Climbing

Traditional lead climbing is the discipline that underpins everything else in climbing. Unlike sport climbing, where protection is pre-bolted into the rock, trad climbing requires you to place your own gear as you ascend — nuts, cams, and other removable protection slotted into features in the rock to catch a fall. It’s a more demanding and more thoughtful style of climbing, and it’s what makes you genuinely self-sufficient on any route, anywhere.

Rock 5 is a heavily practical course with the majority of the day spent on the rock rather than in a classroom. The emphasis throughout is on gear placement — learning to read a feature, select the right piece of protection, and place it so it will actually hold. Anchor building from natural and placed gear is covered in depth, along with the coordination required to move efficiently between leader and second on a trad pitch. These are the skills that take time and repetition to develop, which is why the course prioritises volume of practice over theory.

Trad climbing is also the natural gateway to mountaineering. The gear systems, self-sufficiency, and decision-making developed in Rock 5 translate directly to alpine environments where fixed protection doesn’t exist and the consequences of errors are higher.
