No. The BSAC Boat Handling course is open to anyone aged 16 and over — no diving certification is required. It’s a standalone powerboat qualification that’s useful for divers, boat operators, and anyone who wants a practical MCA-approved certification.
The Boat Handling course covers the fundamentals — boat control, safety, navigation, and emergency procedures. The Post Boat Handling Workshop builds on those skills with more advanced scenarios. The Diver Coxswain Assessment is a formal assessment that results in the full BSAC Diver Coxswain certification, which is the MCA-recognised qualification equivalent to RYA Powerboat Level 2.
The full sequence — Boat Handling, Post Workshop, and Coxswain Assessment — typically takes 4–5 days depending on conditions and assessment scheduling. Each course results in a standalone certification, so you can stop at any point.
Yes. The BSAC Boat Handling qualification is approved by the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency and is recognised internationally. At Coxswain level it’s the equivalent of RYA Powerboat Level 2, which is widely accepted by dive operators and charter companies worldwide.
Matthew Bartlett, Goodtime’s Fleet Manager, is the only BSAC-certified Boat Handling Instructor on Koh Tao. He runs all three courses on Goodtime’s own speedboat fleet in the waters around the island.
